Course Description:

Madeline Black Method™ — 5 Day Intensive, Segment 2 Organizing Movement: Gait Patterning and Whole Body Movement

Segment 2 builds on the foundation of Segment 1, focusing on gait patterning as the basis for assessment and for deciding the direction of a session.

The Madeline Black Method training is offered in two segments, each taught as a 5 day intensive. In each one, Madeline teaches her approach to physical training: observing and understanding how and why a person moves the way they do, then building a session of hands-on techniques and exercises that shift the client toward more efficient movement and a stronger body.

Please note: Segment 1 must be completed before registering for Segment 2. If you have attended a past Madeline Black 5 Day Intensive, that also meets the requirement, and you may register for Segment 2 directly.

This intensive is a chance to bring together what you already know, whether your background is Pilates, yoga or physical training, with a deeper understanding of human movement strategies and how to work with them for positive outcomes. You’ll learn to see the individual in front of you and guide them toward their movement and health goals.

You will learn to:

  • Understand the biomechanics of gait patterning, both globally and in specific regions: the foot, hip joint, pelvis, spine, shoulder girdle and head

  • Use assessment skills to identify the movement strategies that affect a person’s whole movement system

  • Apply hands-on techniques to recalibrate based on your assessment findings

  • Create an approach in real time from a clear understanding of the person’s movement strategies

  • Assess and improve efficient movement from the feet to the head

  • Address specific physical issues that restrict movement, such as joint discomfort

  • Build strength through well-chosen activation and loading exercises

  • Grow as a teacher with guidance and feedback from Madeline throughout the five days

When you change a person’s movement habits and improve their strength in a single session, they come back. Invest in yourself, grow your skills, and increase both your value and your clients’ results.

The Five Days

Each day begins with a movement class focused on that day’s topic.

Day 1 — Gait Patterning: Global Observations and the Pelvis-Hip Joint Focus

Gait patterning is the foundation of human movement: a whole-body pattern that adapts to ground forces. Learning to observe its components, including torso rotation, reciprocal thoracic- pelvic rotation, lumbar lateral flexion, arm swing, hip motion in swing and stance, and rollingthrough the feet, gives us the information to discover a client’s movement strategy. From there, the focus zooms in on the hip joints and pelvis: how they function and how they adapt to forces. We’ll cover assessment of the hip joint and pelvis, recalibration through hands-on techniques and movement, activation to establish efficient movement, and loading exercises that build strength on the Pilates apparatus and with props.

Day 2 — The Thoracic and Lumbo-Pelvic Regions in Three Dimensions

A close look at the reciprocal movements of the pelvis and thorax in gait. These two regions influence each other, and their influence reaches out to the feet, hands and head. We’ll focus on lumbo-pelvic-femoral motion: identifying inefficient movement and how to reset it so that strength can be accessed, then establishing sound movement through the Madeline Black Method.

Day 3 — From the Feet to the Sacrum

The focus turns to the feet, and how the way they transfer load shapes the body’s adaptation and response. We’ll take a close look at the structure of the foot, the movement relationship between the talus and the sacrum, and closed kinematic chain principles. You’ll learn foot assessments, movement re-organizing techniques, and specific sequences that connect the foot to the hip in dynamic movement. We’ll also explore how the feet affect balance, pain, hip joint activation, the pelvic diaphragm and the orientation of the torso.

Day 4 — The Torso-Shoulder Complex and Head

Moving to the upper region of the body, we’ll cover assessment of the upper extremity, thorax and cervical spine. Movement re-organizing and re-education using hands-on techniques, props and Pilates apparatus, with progressions that build from the hand to the torso into challenging, strengthening movements. We’ll also address the physical limitations common to this region.

Day 5 — Session Creation and Practice

Creating an approach rather than a plan: building session approaches from everything you’ve learned, with practice in session sequencing. Live practice sessions with Madeline’s feedback and insights, and a closing circle to share your a-ha moments from the week.

How This Intensive Is Different

Madeline doesn’t teach from a formula. She gives a clear outline of the topics for each day, and as the intensive goes on, the content and approaches adjust to the teachers in the room. Your questions, input and interests become part of the work, so no two intensives are the same. That’s why repeating an intensive several times is highly recommended.
